Sewer Maintenance Notice
The City of Petal is actively working to provide the highest level of service to customers within the sanitary sewer service area. As a part of this commitment the City will be conducting a physical survey of the sanitary sewer system in the areas generally lying east of Springfield Road. This survey will involve the opening and entering of manholes in the streets and easements. An important task of this survey will be the non-toxic smoke testing of the lines to identify possible failures and breaches of the system.
Smoke testing involves forcing nontoxic, harmless smoke through the sewer system. The smoke does not create a fire hazard and is safe to humans, animals and plants. Smoke should not enter a resident’s homes unless there are dry P-Traps or defective plumbing. Residents in the area to be tested should fill seldom used drains with water to prevent smoke from entering the dwelling.
Crews will notify residents prior to beginning work in the area by placing door hanger cards on affected residence. These cards have additional information about what residents should expect to happen during smoke testing.
